After marrying the one you love, living happily ever after isn’t just a fairy tale. Australian researchers have identified the factors that enable couples to stay together for life. Importantly, it takes more than just love.
A study from the Australian National University found that factors such as the spouses’ ages, previous relationships, and even whether they smoke can influence the longevity of a marriage.
The study, titled "What's Love Got to Do With It," tracked nearly 2,500 couples—married or cohabiting—from 2001 to 2007, identifying the factors that kept couples together compared to those who divorced or separated.
The research found that if the husband is nine or more years older than the wife, the likelihood of divorce doubles. The same applies if the husband marries before the age of 25.
Children also affect whether a marriage or cohabitation lasts. Among couples who had children before marriage, one-fifth ended up separating, regardless of whether the children were from previous relationships or the current one. In contrast, only 9% of couples without children before marriage broke up.
Women who want children more than their parents did are also more likely to divorce. (Central News Agency Translation)
