Cycling has become a nationwide craze in Taiwan, but hospitals are seeing an increase in patients with bleeding external hemorrhoids and tailbone injuries. Doctors warn that prolonged poor posture and muscle tension while cycling can lead to tailbone curvature, pain, external hemorrhoid bleeding, and even anal skin abrasions.

In recent years, cycling has surged in popularity, with many people taking weekend rides. However, clinics are reporting numerous cases of cyclists suffering from hemorrhoid swelling, friction-induced skin tears, tailbone curvature, pain, and anal abrasions due to extended riding. Dr. Rao Shuwen, Director of Colorectal Surgery at Tri-Service General Hospital, noted that many young and middle-aged men have recently experienced ruptured subcutaneous blood vessels in external hemorrhoids from prolonged cycling, causing the hemorrhoids to swell to the size of a finger and continuous anal bleeding.

Additionally, some bicycle seats are too hard. Poor posture combined with long hours of cycling can lead to muscle tension, squeezing the tailbone, and resulting in curvature and pain. Sweating during cycling can also cause skin chafing and anal abrasions. Dr. Rao explained, "Over time, this can lead to thrombosed external hemorrhoids and swelling. Prolonged muscle tension, along with clenching and lifting the anus, can pull the tailbone out of alignment, causing pain when pressed against the seat. Sweat can also irritate the skin, leading to friction-induced anal pain."

Dr. Rao advises cyclists to take breaks every 30 minutes to an hour to relax their muscles. Wearing breathable, comfortable cotton clothing is also recommended. Dermatologists remind cyclists to apply sunscreen half an hour before heading out and reapply every two hours during sun exposure. Sweating requires immediate reapplication to prevent sunburn, redness, or sunspots, avoiding a "Bambi-like" appearance.
