No Exercise? Beware of Sudden Death during Sex

American researchers said today that sudden moderate to vigorous physical activity, such as jogging or having sex, can significantly increase the risk of a heart attack, especially for those who do not exercise regularly.

Doctors have long known that physical activity can trigger serious heart problems, but this new study helps quantify the level of risk. The research by Dr. Issa Dahabreh from Tufts Medical Center in Boston was published in the *Journal of the American Medical Association*.

The research team analyzed data from 14 studies examining the relationship between exercise, sex, and the likelihood of heart attacks or sudden cardiac death.

The researchers found that when a person exercises, the risk of a heart attack or sudden cardiac death is 3.5 times higher than when not exercising.

During or immediately after sex, the risk of a heart attack is 2.7 times higher than usual. However, these findings do not apply to sudden cardiac death, as no studies have explored the link between sex and sudden cardiac death.

Another researcher, Jessica Paulus, noted that while the risk appears high in such studies, the period of increased risk is very short.

Paulus said in a phone interview, "The heightened risk during or after physical activity or sex lasts only a very brief time (1 to 2 hours)."

She also pointed out that because of this, the likelihood of an individual experiencing such an event in a year is quite low.

Paulus said, "Statistically speaking, if each person engages in physical activity or sex once a week, only 1 to 2 out of 1,000 people may experience an increased risk of a heart attack or sudden cardiac death in a year."

She emphasized the importance of considering these findings alongside other research. Results show that regular exercise can reduce the risk of heart attacks and sudden cardiac death by 30%.

She added, "We really don’t want people to shy away from exercise, thinking it’s harmful."

Instead, this study suggests that those who rarely exercise should start an exercise program gradually and increase intensity over time. Central News Agency (Translation)
