A U.S. study has found that frequent consumption of foods containing monosodium glutamate (MSG) may lead to obesity. Researchers suggest that obesity is not only related to the quantity of food consumed but also to the body's inability to properly process the calories ingested.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina noted that Americans consume approximately 0.5 grams of MSG daily, while in Asian countries like Japan or South Korea, the intake can range from 1.5 grams to over 10 grams. After observing the dietary habits of 10,000 Chinese individuals over 5.5 years, the study found that those who consumed an average of 5 grams of MSG daily had a 30% higher risk of obesity compared to those who consumed less than 0.5 grams.

Researcher He Kai (transliteration) stated, "MSG is very common, and its consumption increases leptin resistance, which prevents the body from fully processing the energy obtained from food."

The scientific community remains divided on the relationship between MSG and obesity. Some scientists believe that foods containing MSG taste better, leading people to eat larger portions and thus contributing to obesity.

However, Reuters cited Yale University's Alaj, who said, "Eating foods with MSG does not directly cause obesity. Rather, MSG-containing foods often include other ingredients like salt, which may be the actual cause of obesity."

The findings of this study were published in *The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition*.
