Greenpeace yesterday released the results of pesticide residue tests on fruits and vegetables from supermarkets across Taiwan. The findings revealed multiple cases of pesticide levels exceeding standards and the mixing of various pesticides. Out of 58 samples tested, four were found to be in violation, a rate of 7%. Among them, mustard greens from Far Eastern A.Mart in Hualien, jujubes from Matsusei in Taipei, and leeks from Wellcome in Taipei were found to contain banned pesticide residues. Carrefour in Yilan was found to have leeks containing "carbendazim," with pesticide levels exceeding the standard by 1.7 times. These pesticides carry risks of causing cancer and damaging the liver and kidneys, with "carbendazim" potentially leading to testicular atrophy. The retailers have already removed the problematic products from shelves, and local health departments will conduct further inspections.
In December of last year, 58 fruit and vegetable samples from major supermarkets were tested, with 43 found to contain residues of 36 different pesticides. The non-compliant samples included mustard greens from Far Eastern A.Mart in Hualien, jujubes from Matsusei in Taipei, and leeks from Wellcome in Taipei, which contained banned pesticide residues. Carrefour in Yilan was found to have leeks containing "carbendazim," with pesticide levels exceeding the standard by 1.7 times.
While the pesticide residues in other tested fruits and vegetables did not violate regulations, multiple pesticide residues were detected, raising concerns about a "cocktail effect" that could amplify harm. The kumquats from Wellcome in Taipei were found to contain up to nine different pesticides. Other samples, such as leeks from RT-Mart and mustard greens from Far Eastern A.Mart, also contained pesticides classified as highly toxic by the Council of Agriculture. Most major supermarkets have now urgently removed these products from shelves and halted purchases from problematic suppliers.
