Eating too much fried food may cause children to repeatedly develop styes. Recently, not only has the diet become more Westernized, but fried foods are also very popular among children. If parents do not control their children's diet, excessive fat intake may increase sebaceous gland secretion, leading to the formation of multiple pus-filled bumps around the eyes, causing severe pain—commonly known as styes.
Dr. Yan Minfang, director of ophthalmology at the Shu-Tien Clinic, explained that styes are similar to acne, both resulting from excessive sebaceous gland secretion. If the gland's opening becomes blocked, oil buildup can lead to pus-filled bumps. If there is no bacterial infection, it is medically termed a "chalazion," appearing as a small, green bean-sized bump on the eyelid. If bacterial infection occurs, it is called a "hordeolum," which may cause redness, swelling, heat, pain, or pus formation. In severe cases, up to seven or eight bumps may appear, causing intense eye pain.
Dr. Yan added that there was once a four-year-old girl who loved high-fat foods from a young age, especially fried chicken and french fries. As a result, she repeatedly developed styes, with five or six bumps of varying sizes appearing at a time. Initial treatment included antibiotic eye drops, ointments, and oral antibiotics, but the condition kept recurring. Eventually, she underwent surgery to drain the pus-filled bumps, which finally resolved the issue. Dr. Yan emphasized that post-surgery, maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding high-fat foods, keeping hands clean, and refraining from rubbing the eyes can effectively prevent styes from recurring.
