The Ministry of Health and Welfare traced the flow of sodium copper chlorophyllin and discovered that two manufacturers, including Taipei’s Lanyang Food Company and New City International, had used sodium copper chlorophyllin in wet seaweed—an ingredient not permitted for use in seaweed. New City stated that the sodium copper chlorophyllin was sourced from Yiyuan Company and used to dye the wet seaweed, but all of it was exported to Europe and not sold in Taiwan.
This type of glossy green wet seaweed is commonly found in traditional markets and is often used to make seaweed rolls, a popular item in snack shops. However, consumers should be cautious—this green color may come from added sodium copper chlorophyllin. The Ministry of Health and Welfare found that both Lanyang Food Company in Taipei and New City in Pingtung had added sodium copper chlorophyllin to their wet seaweed.
New City International stated, "It’s for coloring. All the seaweed strands we produce are exported to Europe." They emphasized that all dyed seaweed was sold overseas and not distributed in Taiwan. Meanwhile, the long-established Lanyang Food Company was also implicated. An employee from Lanyang Food Company said, "The coloring agent used in this product was specified by Dutch and German clients and fully complies with EU food regulations."
In reality, seaweed comes in two forms: dry and wet. One type is air-dried immediately after harvesting, resulting in a dark green color known as kombu, which is relatively expensive. The other type, wet seaweed, has already been soaked in water. Some manufacturers add unauthorized sodium copper chlorophyllin to make the seaweed appear bright green and appealing. Whether such products have entered the Taiwanese market remains under investigation.
