Huang Yichao, Director of the Department of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, stated that nearly 90% of Taiwan's Chinese herbal medicines rely on imports. This year, 40 types of concentrated Chinese medicine preparations were tested, all of which met the standards. The department will continue to enforce quality control at the source for Chinese medicine preparations.
Huang Yichao mentioned that nearly 90% of Taiwan's Chinese herbal medicines are imported from overseas. Given the prevalent concept of "food as medicine" and the popularity of medicinal diets among the public, to enhance the quality of Chinese medicine preparations and ensure medication safety, the "Limit Standards for Abnormal Substances in Concentrated Chinese Medicine Preparations" have been fully implemented.
He noted that from 2011 to 2013, a total of 384 commercially available Chinese medicine preparations were tested, with 381 passing inspection, yielding a compliance rate of 99.2%. In 2013, 30 high-risk products were tested for aristolochic acid, with a 100% compliance rate.
Huang Yichao pointed out that this year's market inspections have been completed, with 40 types of concentrated Chinese medicine preparations tested, all of which met the standards.
The Department of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy reminded the public not to take medicines of unknown origin. When seeking medical treatment, they should consult licensed Chinese medicine practitioners and carefully read the packaging and information of medicines before use to avoid adverse reactions caused by incorrect usage. Additionally, when traveling abroad, they should not heed unverified recommendations or bring medicines back to the country on their own.
