Hong Chuanyue, former vice president of Taipei Medical University who met Tu Youyou in Beijing in 1992, stated that Tu Youyou's Nobel Prize for artemisinin has given traditional Chinese herbal medicine a significant boost.

Hong’s first impression of Tu was that she was "very polite" and answered all questions without withholding any secrets about extracting artemisinin.

At the time, Tu mentioned that after graduating from university, she dedicated herself to searching for an antimalarial drug. By chance, she came across an ancient text, "Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up One’s Sleeve," which mentioned, "Take a handful of qinghao, soak it in two liters of water, wring out the juice, and drink it all." She then attempted to extract artemisinin from sweet wormwood but initially failed. Later, she reconsidered the ancient text’s omission of "heating" and switched to low-temperature extraction, successfully obtaining artemisinin.

Yang Lingling, dean of the LOHAS College at Fo Guang University, pointed out that artemisinin is extracted from "sweet wormwood," which belongs to the Asteraceae family, like mugwort. Taiwan does not have this plant.

Yang Lingling said Tu Youyou’s research involved first gathering herbs in the mountains, then painstakingly extracting artemisinin in the lab. However, due to the poor laboratory conditions and inadequate ventilation at the time, she contracted drug-induced hepatitis.
