A U.S. study found that the more fast food children eat, the worse their academic performance becomes.
Researchers at Ohio University analyzed the relationship between fast food consumption frequency and school performance among 8,500 American 10-year-old children.
Among these children, 52% had eaten fast food one to three times in the week before the survey, 10% had eaten it four to six times, and another 10% consumed it daily.
Comparing their grades, children who ate fast food daily scored an average of 79 in science, while those who never ate it scored 83. The differences in their reading and math scores were similarly significant.
The researchers concluded that the lack of iron and the high sugar and fat content in fast food may slow brain development, leading to poorer academic performance in frequent consumers.
