"An apple a day keeps the doctor away." This classic saying has recently been debunked. According to the Associated Press, there is little difference in the number of doctor visits between people who frequently eat apples and those who rarely do. Experts explain that this doesn’t mean apples are ineffective for health, but rather that a balanced diet is essential for truly preventing diseases.
A study published in the latest issue of the *Journal of the American Medical Association* found that people who eat apples regularly visit the doctor less often than those who don’t. However, when researchers accounted for factors like weight, race, education, and other variables that could influence doctor visits, the difference diminished. The reason is that those who can afford to eat apples frequently tend to have higher education levels, smoke less, and have the financial means to buy fruits, naturally leading to better health.
Apples are rich in vitamin C, with a medium-sized apple containing about 100 calories and providing 20% of the daily fiber requirement. Additionally, apples contain small amounts of vitamin A, calcium, and iron, making them a highly nutritious fruit. This is why the saying has persisted since the 18th century. The latest study serves as a reminder not to blindly believe such proverbs. Dr. Steven Zeisel, CEO of the Nutrition Research Institute at the University of North Carolina, emphasizes that maintaining a balanced diet is the key.
However, a study by the University of Alberta in Canada at the end of last year found that for people with high physical activity levels, consuming just one apple a day does not provide enough vitamin C to significantly reduce the risk of illness.
