Some older adults are accustomed to taking vitamin B12 supplements for health and wellness. A recent UK study found that vitamin B12 supplements only benefit seniors with severe B12 deficiency, while those with moderate deficiency see little effect.

Dr. Alan Dangour, the study's lead author and a researcher at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, noted that many people regularly take vitamin B12 supplements, believing they can enhance various physiological functions and improve overall health in older adults. However, this study revealed that for seniors with moderate B12 deficiency, taking supplements for 12 months did not improve nervous system function or cognitive abilities.

The findings were recently published in the *American Journal of Clinical Nutrition*.

Natural food sources such as fish, red meat, poultry, and dairy products contain vitamin B12.

Researchers pointed out that for older adults with severe B12 deficiency, supplements can help reduce risks such as muscle weakness, fatigue, depression, memory impairment, and cognitive difficulties.

The study involved over 200 participants aged 75 and above, all with moderate B12 deficiency. They were divided into two groups—one receiving B12 supplements and the other a placebo—for a year, leading to the above conclusions.

Dr. Dangour recommends that seniors aiming to maintain physical and mental health should adopt a healthy, varied diet, engage in regular mental and physical activity, and establish consistent exercise habits.
