The latest survey from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday (3) revealed that from June to mid-August this year, due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant domestically, the hospitalization rates among children and adolescents after infection surged. Unvaccinated adolescents had hospitalization rates 10 times higher than their fully vaccinated peers, though the rate of severe illness did not increase.
The report noted that during this summer, hospitalization rates for children and adolescents infected with COVID-19 rose nearly fivefold, though still lower than the peak in January. Statistics showed that children under 4 and adolescents aged 12 to 17 had the highest hospitalization rates. Among hospitalized children, one in four required intensive care, a proportion similar to before the Delta variant's spread, with no significant difference.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky emphasized that as community case numbers rise, the number of children visiting emergency rooms and being hospitalized due to infection will also increase. However, studies indicate that the Delta variant does not raise the likelihood of severe illness in children.
Another CDC report highlighted that late August data showed emergency room visits in the least vaccinated Southern U.S. states were 3.4 times higher than in the most vaccinated states, with hospitalization rates also 3.7 times higher. Although severe illness and death rates among children remain far lower than in adults, the rising case numbers have led to many pediatric hospitals facing capacity crises.
Currently, the U.S. has approved vaccines for those aged 12 and older. Research shows that during this summer's Delta wave, unvaccinated adolescents were hospitalized at 10 times the rate of vaccinated ones. Given this, CDC researchers stressed the importance of preventive measures to reduce children's exposure and transmission, including vaccination, mask-wearing in schools, and indoor masking for those aged 2 and above in public spaces.
