Statistics recently completed by the Ministry of the Interior show that, under the long-term contraction of job opportunities and continuous reduction in salaries, the number of births in Taiwan last year fell below 200,000 for the first time, with the birth rate dropping to 8.64 per thousand, both setting new historical lows. Due to the rapid freeze in economic conditions, it is estimated that the number of births and the birth rate will further decline this year, presenting an extremely severe situation.

Officials from the Ministry of the Interior stated yesterday that the number of births in Taiwan has decreased from 414,000 in 1980 to 305,000 in 2000, and further dropped to 198,000 in 2008. This is closely related to the recent economic downturn and the sharp decline in job opportunities in Taiwan. With young people generally feeling uneasy about the economic outlook, they naturally are reluctant to have children.

It is noteworthy that from the second half of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008, Taiwan's economic growth rate exceeded 6% for three consecutive quarters. This optimistic trend should have helped to increase the birth rate in 2008, but the final statistical results indicate: "Last year's birth rate hit a new historical low, only 8.64 per thousand, not only lower than the 13.76 per thousand in 2000, but also only half of the birth rate in 1990." This shows that short-term economic prosperity does not help to increase the birth rate at all.

The Ministry of the Interior stated that the outside world originally thought that the marriage rate rising from 5.89 per thousand the previous year to 6.73 last year meant that young people were optimistic about the economic prospects. However, further analysis revealed that this was due to the influence of the custom that the "lonely phoenix year" (this year) is not suitable for marriage, prompting people to marry before the end of last year. With the rapid freeze in economic conditions, it is estimated that newly married young people still dare not have children.

He said that some people thought that the increase in the marriage rate last year and the increase in people taking unpaid leave at home would help the birth rate; in fact, without stable jobs and sufficient income, no one dares to have children. It is estimated that the number of births this year will further decline.
