According to Taiwanese media reports, the latest data from the "Ministry of the Interior" compiled by the "Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics" indicates that the birth rate on the island hit a new low last year, and the marriage rate was also the second lowest in history, reflecting a trend of people choosing not to marry or have children. The time for negative population growth on the island may come earlier than expected.
It is reported that the "Ministry of the Interior" recently completed the latest population statistics for the island. Last year, there were only 204,414 newborns on the island, with a birth rate of 8.92‰, an average decrease of more than 12,000 births per year. The number of female infants continues to decline, with fewer than 10,000 female infants born each year for the past three years, only about 90% of the number of male infants born in the same year. Over the past five years, the average annual number of male and female infants born has shown a gap of nearly 10,000. Relevant officials are concerned that this trend will have a negative impact on the gender structure of the island in the long run.
Last year, the mortality rate of the population also hit a record high, with 141,111 deaths, a mortality rate of 6.16‰. Coupled with the fact that the number of foreign immigrants to Taiwan did not increase significantly last year, the total population growth rate on the island last year was only 3.57‰, also a record low. Officials from the "Council for Economic Planning and Development" stated that the original estimate was that negative population growth would occur in 2019, but the birth rate has been hitting new lows since 2000, and negative population growth may come earlier.
Officials analyzed that the significant decrease in newborns in Taiwan is mainly due to young people marrying later. Last year, the number of marriages on the island dropped sharply to 135,041 pairs, with a marriage rate of only 5.89‰, the second lowest in history, only slightly higher than the 5.8‰ in 2004. Officials stated that in the past, most women on the island would have two children before the age of 35; however, recently, the age at which women on the island have their first child has been significantly delayed to 31 or 32 years old, and to avoid the risks of advanced maternal age, most women are unwilling to have a second child.
