Health News Network / Guan Jiaqing Report October 12, 2012

According to the September bean curd product inspection results released by the New Taipei City Health Bureau, two out of 30 samples of tofu, dried tofu, and bean curd sheets were found to contain residual hydrogen peroxide. Since hydrogen peroxide is a sterilizing and bleaching agent that can cause irritation when ingested, the bureau advises the public to avoid purchasing dried tofu products that appear overly bright or white.

The New Taipei City Health Bureau conducted inspections of bean products such as tofu, dried tofu, and bean curd sheets from traditional vendors and restaurants. The tests included checks for preservatives like sorbic acid, dehydroacetic acid, and benzoic acid, as well as the sterilizing agent hydrogen peroxide. The results showed that two "dried tofu" samples failed to meet standards due to the presence of "hydrogen peroxide." Both products were sourced from the same supplier on Section 2, Zhongshan Road, Bali District, New Taipei City.

In addition to immediately notifying vendors and restaurants to remove the products from shelves, the New Taipei City Health Bureau also penalized the supplier for violating Article 12 of the Food Sanitation Management Act, imposing a fine ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000.

Lin Guan-zhen, head of the Food and Drug Administration Division of the Health Bureau, stated that hydrogen peroxide, which has sterilizing and bleaching effects, may cause irritation or skin stinging symptoms when consumed and is therefore prohibited by regulations. Consumers should purchase dried tofu products from reputable vendors and avoid those with overly bright or white appearances. Additionally, soaking and rinsing the products thoroughly with water before cooking can help prevent the ingestion of excessive or illegal food additives, ensuring personal safety.
