A 13-year-old middle school boy who ate fast food for almost every meal and paired it with sugary drinks recently sought medical attention due to poor concentration in class and frequent urination, only to discover he had developed diabetes.

Hong Jiande, director of the Metabolism Department at Shu-Tien Clinic, said the middle school boy visited the doctor due to fatigue, lack of focus in class, frequent urination, and a rapid weight loss of six kilograms within two months. Upon questioning, it was revealed that the boy frequently consumed fast food, always accompanied by a sugary drink, rarely drank water, and had parents and a grandfather who were also diabetic.

Hong Jiande noted that diabetes is trending younger, with patients under 20 accounting for 2% of cases in Taiwan, a figure that is rising annually.

After studying the dietary habits of these young patients, Hong found their commonality was frequent consumption of sugary drinks. He stated that drinking two cups (1,000 cc) of sugary beverages daily for three to four years can lead to persistently high blood sugar levels that are difficult to lower.

Zhang Fangyuan, an attending physician in the Metabolism Department at Zhenxing Hospital, said there is currently no evidence that sugary drinks directly cause diabetes. However, their high caloric content can lead to obesity, increasing the risk of developing diabetes.
