The latest research results confirm the association between sudden life changes, psychological stress, and breast cancer. These findings were published in the online journal BMC Cancer of BioMed Central.
Ronit Peled, who led the study, said in a telephone interview with Reuters: "Young women who experience more than one sudden life change should be considered as a potential risk group for breast cancer and should be treated accordingly."
Professor Ronit Peled from Ben-Gurion University in Beer Sheva, Negev, Israel, and her colleagues conducted research on 255 young women under the age of 45 who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, comparing them with 367 healthy women of the same age.
The research team evaluated the association between these women developing breast cancer and experiencing major life changes, such as the death of a parent before the age of 20, the death of a spouse or close relative, divorce, etc. They also studied moderate to minor life changes, such as separation from a spouse, unemployment, family financial crises, and serious illness of a relative.
