A research report by American scientists states that charred meat produces a compound that can cause prostate cancer in mice.

The findings were presented at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. The compound, known as PhIP (a type of heterocyclic amine), is produced when meat is overcooked or grilled excessively.

In this study, experts fed mice food mixed with PhIP for eight weeks and then examined their prostate, intestines, and spleen. They found signs of cancerous changes in the prostate after four weeks of feeding.

The researchers said, "We accidentally discovered a link between cancer development in mice and their consumption of grilled meat. For humans, the biggest challenge is determining the exact intake level of PhIP, which is extremely difficult."
