Lack of Sleep Increases Cancer Risk

Regular exercise helps reduce the risk of developing cancer, but lack of sleep may negate the benefits of exercise.

This study, which involved nearly 6,000 American women aged 18 to 65, reaffirmed that those who exercise regularly have a lower risk of cancer. However, the benefits of exercise can be diminished by insufficient sleep.

Researchers divided the subjects into two groups based on the amount of exercise they engaged in. They then analyzed the sleep patterns of the group that exercised more. The results showed that those who slept less than 7 hours a day had a nearly 50% higher risk of cancer compared to those who slept more than 7 hours.

The exact mechanism by which insufficient sleep increases the risk of cancer is not yet clear, but it is well-known that adequate sleep is beneficial to health.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has long considered sleep deprivation a potential threat to public health. Over the past 20 years, the proportion of American adults sleeping less than 6 hours a day has been steadily increasing.

Sleep experts say that lack of sleep is associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and depression. It also makes people more prone to developing bad habits such as smoking and excessive drinking.

Regular exercise, on the other hand, can reduce the risk of various cancers, including breast and colon cancer, because exercise has a positive impact on endocrine function, immune system strength, and body weight.
