The air pollution situation in Hong Kong is severe, with approximately 30 to 40 percent of people having experienced nasal allergies, but half of them have never sought medical treatment for their nasal allergies. Nasal allergies can lead to complications such as sinusitis, nasal polyps, and asthma. A doctor stated yesterday that Hong Kong people suffer more from perennial nasal allergies. Over the past decade, treatment medications like steroid sprays have been continuously improved, with second-generation new drugs even suitable for children as young as two years old.

Specialist Dr. Yu Weixiang said yesterday that the second-generation steroid sprays are not only suitable for younger patients but also significantly reduce the total dose of steroids entering the body through the bloodstream compared to previous versions. He recommends using new drugs to treat child patients to minimize the impact on their development. Additionally, child patients should regularly see a doctor and monitor their physical condition. Although long-term patients need to use sprays frequently, Dr. Yu also advises them to follow the doctor's instructions and occasionally stop the medication to check the spray's effects on the local nasal cavity. The latest spray only needs to be used once a day, with the medication taking effect after four hours, reducing inflammation.

Furthermore, since steroids have many side effects, such as affecting children's development, adults may also suffer from osteoporosis, stomach bleeding, weight gain, and increased blood sugar and blood pressure. Therefore, doctors do not encourage patients to take steroids orally or through injections.
