Loneliness is like a disease, and worse, it can be contagious. Research by psychologist Cacioppo from the University of Chicago found that loneliness can spread from person to person. If you have social connections with a lonely person, the likelihood of developing feelings of loneliness increases by 52%.

This study, funded by the U.S. government, was published in this month's "Journal of Personality and Social Psychology." Cacioppo pointed out: "Loneliness is not just an individual trait; it can also spread between people and even affect those who have no direct contact."

The study's data came from 4,793 participants in the "Framingham Heart Study," who were interviewed every two years between 1991 and 2001. The results showed that if you have a social connection with a lonely person, the probability of experiencing loneliness increases by 52%. For your friends, the probability is 25%, and for friends of friends, it’s 15%.

The study also found that loneliness spreads more easily among women, possibly because women are better at expressing their emotions. Additionally, lonely individuals tend to drift toward the edges of their social networks, becoming increasingly isolated. This trend further exacerbates their loneliness, affecting interpersonal relationships. In other words, lonely people do not "flock together."

The study did not examine exactly how loneliness spreads, but Cacioppo speculated that lonely people tend to interact with others in negative ways, causing negative words and actions to ripple outward.

The research showed that lonely individuals are less trusting of others, making it difficult to form friendships in a vicious cycle. Loneliness is linked to certain psychological and mental illnesses that may shorten lifespan. Therefore, experts suggest it is crucial to reach out and support lonely individuals before they become socially marginalized.
