Many people believe that sweating during exercise is necessary for weight loss, and some even think that eating within an hour after exercise leads to weight gain. Doctors today clarified that these are misconceptions. In fact, after exercising, it’s fine to consume high-glycemic index foods like bread in moderation, but avoid overeating.

MJ Health Management Institution released a survey on common exercise misconceptions, conducting a simple questionnaire among its northern branch members, with 1,010 responses collected. The results showed that 53% believed sweating heavily during exercise is essential for weight loss, 42.5% thought eating within an hour after exercise causes weight gain, and 37% assumed muscle soreness after exercise indicates muscle strain.

Dr. Zhu Dawei, director of MJ Health Management Institution, explained that sweating heavily doesn’t equate to weight loss—similar to the trend of wrapping oneself in plastic wrap to sweat, which only sheds water weight. Once you rehydrate, the weight returns. Generally, to achieve weight loss, one should exercise at least three times a week, with each session lasting 20 to 30 minutes.

Jian Wenren, a physical therapist at Cathay General Hospital, noted that the key to exercise-induced weight loss lies in heart rate and breathing. The "333" rule has been suggested in the past: exercising at least three times a week, 30 minutes per session, with a post-exercise heart rate of 130 beats per minute.

Additionally, many yoga and fitness instructors advise against eating within an hour after exercise. However, Zhu Dawei stated that consuming high-glycemic index foods like rice, wheat, or bread post-workout is acceptable. Jian Wenren suggested that eating within 30 minutes after exercise should be moderate—avoid overeating or simply drink more water. After an hour, dietary restrictions are less strict.

Some also worry that cycling or sprinting will thicken their legs. Jian Wenren recommended stretching or doing lunges to relax the calf muscles.
