American scientists said today that chemicals used to make non-stick pans and waterproof fabrics may increase cholesterol levels in children.

In the study, children with the highest levels of these chemicals in their blood had significantly higher total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), commonly known as "bad" cholesterol, compared to the control group with lower chemical levels.

Stephanie Frisbee from West Virginia University and her research team wrote in the "Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine" that the findings do not prove these chemicals, called perfluoroalkyl acids, cause higher readings, but they indicate an association and suggest the need for further research.

They studied perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). Scientists say these chemicals can enter the human body through drinking water, dust, food packaging, breast milk, umbilical cord blood, microwave popcorn, air, and workplace exposure.

Research reports from animal experiments suggest that perfluoroalkyl acids can affect the liver, thereby altering cholesterol levels. Central News Agency (Translation)
