Dechang dried tofu was found to contain the banned dye dimethyl yellow in Hong Kong. The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) also detected the dye in semi-finished oil slices, black pepper dried tofu, vegetarian mushroom dried tofu, and satay dried tofu.

On December 6, the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety announced that "black pepper dried tofu" manufactured by Taiwan's Dechang Food Co., Ltd. was found to contain dimethyl yellow, a dye prohibited in food. Dimethyl yellow is banned worldwide, and animal experiments have confirmed it can cause cancer, though its impact on human health remains unknown.

On December 7, the TFDA Central Regional Administration and the Taichung City Health Bureau sent personnel to inspect Dechang Food. The health bureau sealed approximately 5,000 packages of five types of black pepper dried tofu products in the factory and tested raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products.

Wang Deyuan, a senior technical specialist at the TFDA Northern Regional Administration, stated that a total of 19 raw materials, two semi-finished products, and eight finished products were sampled. Test results showed no detection in raw materials, but dimethyl yellow was found in semi-finished and some finished products.

Wang Deyuan noted that dimethyl yellow was detected in the semi-finished products "oil slices" and "black pepper dried tofu post-baking semi-finished product," as well as the finished products "black pepper dried tofu," "vegetarian mushroom dried tofu," and "satay dried tofu."

Weng Hongyuan / Taipei Report

De Chang Food's "Black Pepper Dried Tofu" was recently found by Hong Kong authorities to contain the illegal dye dimethyl yellow. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated today (16th) that after investigation, the source was traced to the oil-based yellow powder used in the emulsifier for upstream soybean product ingredients. The supplier, Qianxin Industrial in Tainan City, disclosed that the yellow powder was purchased from Rongmei Chemical in Tainan. Besides De Chang, other affected products include Huang Damu's "Black Pepper Dried Tofu" and Yu Xiang Food's spicy dried tofu.

De Chang's dried tofu was tested by Hong Kong and found to contain the carcinogenic substance dimethyl yellow. The FDA held an urgent press conference today, revealing that inspections were conducted at De Chang Food on December 7 by the FDA and Taichung City Health Bureau. Samples included 19 raw materials, 2 semi-finished products, and 8 finished products. While no dimethyl yellow was detected in raw materials, it was found in semi-finished products such as "oil slices (skins)" and "black pepper dried tofu after baking," as well as finished products like "Black Pepper Dried Tofu," "Vegetarian Mushroom Dried Tofu," and "Satay Dried Tofu."

Wang Deyuan, a senior technical officer at the FDA, pointed out that after Taichung City Health Bureau inspected five other dried tofu products, dimethyl yellow was also detected in Pinxiang Shijia Huang Damu's "Black Pepper Dried Tofu," Baohong Enterprise's "Daxi Dried Tofu (Large Satay)," and Yu Xiang Food's "Yu Xiang Dried Tofu (Spicy Flavor)." However, it was not found in Fuji Frozen Food's "Japanese Vegetarian Dried Tofu (Spicy)" or Huang Rixiang's "Huang Rixiang Fragrant Dried Tofu."

The source of dimethyl yellow in these dried tofu products was traced to the oil-based yellow powder used in emulsifiers for soybean product ingredients. Qianxin Industrial stated that the yellow powder was purchased from Rongmei Chemical. The emulsifiers made from it were sold not only to De Chang but also to major manufacturers like Deli China Food, Tiansu, and Yu Xiang. The FDA has required companies that used Qianxin's soybean product emulsifiers to voluntarily report to health authorities by midnight tomorrow and complete product recalls by Saturday, or face fines of up to NT$50 million.

Wang Deyuan explained that according to the FDA's food industry registration platform, Qianxin Industrial did not list oil-based yellow powder in its "Qianxin Soybean Product Emulsifier," constituting false labeling in violation of Article 8 of the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act. Penalties under Article 47 range from NT$30,000 to NT$3 million. Additionally, Qianxin provided false information to the Tainan City Health Bureau on the 11th, which could also result in fines of NT$30,000 to NT$3 million. The use of unapproved dimethyl yellow as a dye carries penalties of NT$60,000 to NT$50 million under the same law, and adulteration may lead to imprisonment of up to five years.
