Reporter Li Shuren/Taipei Report

Using eye drops nearly caused blindness! A young woman suffering from conjunctivitis purchased eye drops on her own and used them continuously for half a year. Her vision significantly deteriorated to only 0.1, and examinations revealed that her optic nerve had atrophied. Doctors discovered that the eye drops she used were actually post-surgery specific drops containing steroids, which led to glaucoma.

Wu Jianliang, director of ophthalmology at Taipei Wanfang Hospital, stated that many people believe eye drops are very safe and use a drop whenever they feel discomfort in their eyes. In fact, eye drops hide many unseen dangers. Wu Jianliang pointed out that larger-capacity eye drops or artificial tears on the market contain preservatives, which can trigger more severe allergic reactions in people with sensitive constitutions if used frequently.

Additionally, general eye drops contain vasoconstrictors to reduce redness in the eyes, but these ingredients can also cause allergic symptoms in a small number of people. Some individuals use eye drops four or five times a day without seeing any improvement in their eye condition, while their allergic reactions become increasingly severe.

If one inadvertently uses eye drops containing steroids, the consequences could be even more dire. Wu Jianliang mentioned that the 21-year-old young woman had conjunctivitis half a year ago and felt discomfort in her eyes, so she went to the ophthalmology department for treatment. The doctor prescribed a bottle of prescription eye drops.

After using the drops, her symptoms eased significantly. Considering the cost of consultation and treatment fees for a follow-up visit, the woman decided to purchase the drops herself from a pharmacy and continued using them for half a year. Unexpectedly, her vision worsened, and upon examination at the hospital, it was found that her optic nerve had atrophied, indicating severe glaucoma, with her vision reduced to only 0.1. Even after stopping the medication, her vision did not recover.
