As the cold wave hits, besides wearing more clothes and keeping warm, adequate sleep is also a crucial factor. According to a recent study published by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, people who sleep less than seven hours a day are more likely to catch a cold, with the rate being 30% higher than those who sleep more than eight hours.

The study, led by Professor Kang Heng from the university, involved 153 healthy participants with an average age of 37. Their nightly sleep duration was recorded over two weeks. Participants were asked about the quality of their sleep, whether they slept soundly, and symptoms of colds such as nasal congestion and runny nose.

The findings, recently published in the "International Medical Journal" database, indicate a strong positive correlation between poor sleep and catching a cold. Those who could not achieve more than 92% of sound sleep in bed had a significantly higher incidence of cold symptoms, 5.5 times more than those with good sleep quality.

Previous studies have mostly focused on the causal relationship between sleep deprivation and reduced immunity, but none have investigated sleep quality as a contributing factor to diseases like the common cold. Experts believe the link is primarily because disturbed sleep affects the normal levels of histamine, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and adhesion molecules in the body, making it easier for viruses to cause colds.
